This Week's Photo Challenge: A photo seriesThis week we are going to mix up the photo challenge activities. Instead of doing a photo challenge every day, we are going to create a full photo series. Don't know what a photo series is? That's okay! Watch this instructional video: What is occupying your mind this week?Your challenge this week is to create a photo series explaining what has been occupying your mind this week. Below are some instructions: #1 - Do not create today. Just let the project settle in your mind. Brainstorm and journal some ideas. #2 - Make 4-6 photographs throughout the week that explore what you've been thinking about. #3 - Use a free app like Unfold, Google Photos, Canva, or Adobe Spark to stitch the photos together into one document. #4- Upload your new layout, your photo series, to our google classroom by Friday April 3. Email me if you have any questions! Pictures from FridayA lot of great scenes here, my friends! I'm glad to see you all out and about and exploring the world from a different point of view! Check out what everyone did:

Photo Challenge #10 - Birds Eye ViewFor this one, get up high. Climb some stairs, or a tree, or ... whatever else that you can climb without your mom freaking out. We're talking about taking a photo from BIRDS EYE VIEW, remember that? So go climb something. Take the world in for a minute, what looks different? Then take a picture. You have the weekend for this one. And remember to submit your photo to OUR GOOGLE CLASSROOM!!! See y'all again on Monday. PEACE! Photos from YesterdayEveryone got pretty creative with the water photos from yesterday. Love how you all are pushing your boundaries and working with what you've got! Click the button below to see our entire class gallery: Video: What is Contrast? Many folks asked about contrast in the survey I sent out last week. What is it? When to use it? How to create it? Remember, CONTRAST refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama. This short video will show you what adding contrast via PHOTOSHOP looks like. If you don't have photoshop, that's ok. Grab your phone and download either the VSCO app or Snapseed. These are both awesome tools to edit your photos on the go! Photo Challenge #9 - Water“I'm always happy when I'm surrounded by water, I think I'm a Mermaid or I was a mermaid. The ocean makes me feel really small and it makes me put my whole life into perspective… it humbles you and makes you feel almost like you’ve been baptized. I feel born again when I get out of the ocean.” ― Beyoncé For today's challenge, capture water. Push yourself to get unique with it! Look for movement or reflections. Wait for the light to be just right. Create something new. Photos from YesterdayLeading lines are pretty tricky, right? I loved seeing how creative you all got, trying to find a line or two to put as your main feature in your composition. Check out what everyone did, click the button below!
Photo Challenge #8 - Leading LinesLeading lines refers to a technique of composition where the viewer of your photos attention is drawn to lines that lead to the main subject of the image. A leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. I took my husband for a responsible and socially distant walk over the weekend in search of some leading lines. It was a lot harder than I wanted it to be, but I am excited to see what y'all come up with! *Remember to turn in your photo on our Google Classroom* Photos from YesterdayWay to go everyone! I can't post everyone's entries like I used to, so here's a link to see what everyone did:
Photo Challenge #7 - TreesA quote from John Muir, a man known in the USA as the "Father of National Parks": “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” Find a tree or two or three and take a photo. As with all these challenges, the real challenge is to take NEW photos. Don't go through your camera phone and find one from last summer. Go for a SAFE walk and find some inspiration... Capture trees! Pictures from yesterdayIt's really awesome to see more people participating. Thanks for sending your photos, keep them coming! If you have any problems with that, you can email me at [email protected] with your photo and a quick explanation of what's not working. Pictures from FridayWow! Loving all the creativity y'all had to offer on this one. Way to go finding or creating interesting architecture!
Photo Challenge #5: ArchitectureWell, we have made it a week in this brave new world, my friends. For those of you feeling weird, I'm right there with ya. For those of you who have enjoyed this time so far, I salute you! Today's prompt is all about structure (since ya know, we haven't had any in a week!). If you can, go for a walk. Look at whatever buildings your walk has to offer. Then find something unique about a structure and capture it. Or create a unique structure and take a photo! Remember, when the building is the focus make sure you cut out anything distracting in the frame that would make you lose focus of the building. Make it a clean shot! Today you are going to capture architecture. As always, I love to see your work. Send in your architecture examples to [email protected]. And agian, to inspire you, here's a quote from Meis van der Rohe, "Less is more." Pictures from yesterdayMinimalism is a tricky one, right? Good job to the folks who submitted their examples yesterday. Take the weekend to produce this new challenge. I'll post Architecture examples on Monday! P.S.Teachers will start emailing you either today, this weekend, or by Monday with a plan on how to learn going forward. Things will still be a bit *weird* ... but all teachers will be updating their websites regularly starting next week. As for this class, I am working today to see how we can get more students submitting photos, commenting on each other's work, and keep exploring this thing we call creativity. It will be a work in progress! So thanks for being patient with all us teachers as we navigate this new situation.
Thank you for the millionth time to all you who have sent me emails, posted photos, and kept engaging in the content. Y'all are true rockstars and keep me smiling. Happy Friday (: Photo Challenge #4 - MinimalismI'm so thankful that we can keep interacting and sharing in our creativity through the blog. Many of you are emailing me and saying it's a nice respite from all the weirdness to take pictures. And oh how my photography teacher heart sings when I hear that! Ha (: I'm hoping you all are starting to see why I love doing this so much and maybe you're even finding a more personal connection to it. Today look for something that you can capture in a minimal way. Make sure there's nothing distracting in the background. Focus on just one thing and make it POP! Here's a quote to inspire you from Leonardo da Vinci: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Pictures from yesterdayAwesome job finding and creating some repetition! What did you learn from it? I personally love the DEPTH repetition can provide in a photo.
Photo Challenge #3 - RepetitionThe photo challenge series is catching on folks! Keep that creativity flowing. Up next is repetition. This one is a tricky one, and you're going to need to clever with it. But get out there and find something repeating over and over again. Then capture it. I found this quote from Gertrude Stein as inspiration: "This is a lesson history teaches: repetition." Go take photos of something repeating. What can you learn from it? *As always, these prompts are totally optional. But real fun! Email me what you create at [email protected] * Pictures from yesterdayIt was pretty great to stop and smell the roses with ya'll. Thanks for sending in your work, keep it coming! Here are the flowers that were captured yesterday:
Photo Challenge #2 - FlowersI LOVE seeing what you all did with shadows yesterday. In case you missed it, go back to yesterday's post to see the first challenge (shadows!). Today, we are going to capture flowers. As long as your parents are cool with it, go outside and enjoy some nature. As Ralph Waldo Emerson says, "Flowers are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty out values all the utilities in the world." Capture a flower or two. Remember, these cuties are complex creatures. Get close to them, look at them from all angles. Pay attention to the direction of light. And spend a moment enjoying the beauty before snapping a picture. Whatever photo you capture, send them to me via email at [email protected]. Can't wait to see what you create! (remember: this isn't homework! participate when you can whenever you want!) Pictures from yesterdayI loved seeing what y'all did with shadows yesterday. Here are the highlights (ha, you see what I did there?):
